Americans Fear Loss of Freedom on Anniversary of Health Care Reform Law
Washington, D.C., March 23, 2011 — Revere America, a grassroots organization that supports market-based solutions to America’s problems, warned today that a majority of voters see the health care reform law as a threat to their freedom because it empowers the federal government to force people to buy a product they might not want – health insurance.
A new poll by Revere America, conducted by the respected Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies, found that 63% of voters would repeal the part of the law that requires most individuals to have or purchase their own health insurance or pay a penalty on their federal income tax return if they don’t.
According to Marianne R.P. Zuk, president and chief executive officer of Revere America: “The essence of this law is the raw power it gives the federal government to dictate to individuals that they must buy a product they may not want or be punished for not doing so. It also dictates to states how they must spend the tax revenues they collect from their citizens. This is a threat to liberty that the public senses and dislikes.”
She added: “The public understands intuitively the argument Revere America has made before the federal courts that if Congress’ power to regulate interstate commerce is expanded to enable it to force individual citizens to buy products they do not want, then little if anything will be left of the retained rights guaranteed by the Ninth Amendment, or of the distinction between a citizen and a subject.”
Revere America is committed to repealing the health care reform law and replacing it with reforms that enjoy broad support, preserve the patient-physician relationship and allow America to continue to prosper.
Revere America is a 501 (c)(4) organization dedicated to advancing common sense public policies rooted in our traditions of freedom and free markets that will once again make America secure and prosperous for generations to come. More information about Revere America is at www.revereamerica.org.
